Understanding the Context
Ezra was a scribe and priest, who in 457 BC, was sent with religious and political powers by the Persian King Artaxerxes to lead a group of Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem (Ezra 7:8, 12). Ezra condemned mixed marriages and encouraged Jews to divorce and banish their foreign wives. Ezra (flourished 5th–4th century bce, Babylon and Jerusalem) was a religious leader of the Jews who returned from exile in Babylon, a reformer who reconstituted the Jewish community on the basis of the Torah Law (the regulations outlined in the first five books of the Hebrew Bible).
